First Try at Moson Model Show 2017

I was joined to competition with my Su-33 Flanker D.

Category was M-17 which is:

Master 1:72 and smaller, (with open service panels).

My Su-33 was 2nd prize winner of Master Category.

McDonnell Douglas F-4E PHANTOM

This Phantom is a member of 172. squadron,   7. Main Jet Base    Erhac – Malatya – Turkey.

Hasegawa kit, 1/48 scale, box number 07208, total 134 parts.

Generally building is very enjoyable with addition of some detail set. I am sure i am going to built another one in the future.

Nice and sharp engraved panel lines but almost there is no rivet detail. Normally F-4 have lot of rivet detail on fuselage and over wings. It must be corrected.

There is no fitting problem especially canopy fits perfect.

Air intake inside detail is insufficient also exhaust. Cockpit detail is normal as standart Hasegawa 1/48 cockpit. It will be much better with detail set. Seat detail is poor. Pilots are nice detailed. Kits AIM-9J missiles are not correct shape. Landing gear bays are empty.

Corrections and additions:

  • Rivet detail was added to all necessary area
  • Flaperons were extended but right wings one is not correct. I learned after building that there is no up movement of flaperon. Movement should be on between neutral and down position. Note: Instead of up movement of the flaperon, F-4 uses speedbrake on over the wings for that.
  • Exhaust nozzles are AIRES – 4118 box number.
  • Cockpit is AIRES – 4126 box number. Instrument panel colorless photoetch from same box. It painted with Vallejo acrylics.
  • Pilots are Aerobonus by AIRES – “F-4B/N/J/S US Navy pilot and operator with ejection seats”.
  • Head of pilots from Hasegawa kits itself.
  • Landing gear bays are AIRES.
  • Placards are EDUARD.
  • Air scoops are QUICKBOOST.
  • Pitot tube is MASTER MODEL.
  • Weighted wheels are ROYAL RESIN.
  • Weapons are from Hasegawa Aircraft Weapons: C set
  • Decals are HI-DECAL LINE.
  • Paint are all acrylics from Vallejo.
  • Antennas are sctratch build according to Turkis Air Force F-4 type.

This kit 1/48 scale, Hasegawa, box number 07219, F-104C Starfighter model. I converted this F-104C to F-104G model. Main difference is tail between C and G model. Tail converted to G model with evergreen plastic parts.

Kit totaly same quality with TF-104 mentioned previous model.

  • Canopy inside de-icing pipes are plastic styrene hand made because no detail set coming with Aires for this system.
  • Pitot tube metal from Master Model.

This kit is 1/48 scale, 07240 box numbered Hasegawa TF-104 Starfighter. Very precise and sharp engraved panel lines in my opinion. There are two type exhaust and inside well detailed. Landing gear areas,struts and optional airbrakes are also good detailed. For loading there are only wing tip fuel tanks for this aircraft. There is no armament. Flap/Slat positions are optional. Air intakes are standart F-104, very small intake space so not possible to see inside. That means very easy intake assembly. Cockpit detail is normal. Seats are given Martin Baker MK07 but i used Lockheed C-2 type seat from AIRES for this kit. 6 clear parts canopy is the most problem area on this model especially if you plan to make closed. (There is extra canopy given for F-104 near TF-104canopy). Except that this model is pleasant model.

I used AIRES detail set for cockpit and landing gear bay. Need a lot of sanding and dry fit to place resin. Especially resin landing gear bays, after lot of sanding symmetry is go off so this affects the angle of the gear strut and this affects attitude of fuselage over landing gear.

Pilot are resin from PJ Production which is well detailed.

Pitot tube from Qickboost.

All antennas scratch build from Evergreen plastic.

Decals are from TigerHead Decals.

All paints from Vallejo acrylics.

Hasegawa 1/48 scale F-16C kit box numbered 07232. Well detailed engraved panel lines, some small fitting problems, seam line along the two part canopy. No detail in the landing gear and gear bays. Air intake is 4 peaces. Thatswhy to make intake seamless is very difficult. Cockpit side panels good detailed but instrument panel and glare shield are too small. I preferred resin instead of the orijinal seat. Given weapons suitable for SEAD  (Suppression of Enemy Air Defences) operation F-16 but i convert the weapons for SEAD Training Mission to make this F-16C. Dummy AGM-88, Dummy AIM-9 and ACMI Pod. Paints are Vallejo Acrylics, clear varnish Tamiya X-22, mat varnish is Microscale. Decals are Caracal Models

I did some modifications to make more detailed finish;

Instrument panel Multi Function Display was created from plastic card and glare shield expanded to make its normal width.

Seam line over canopy was deleted  with sand paper, polished with nail polishing sponge.

Canopy inside was detailed by using plastic, putty and some wire.

I changed the canopy color. To make this i used mix of (%90) Tamiya X-22, (%5) Tamiya Smoke X-19, (%5) Tamiya Clear Yellow X-24. This mixture was sprayed to canopy with airbrush only one layer but thick as possible.

Landing gear bays and strut was detailed using combination of stretched sprue, wire, cable and some plastic parts.

Air intake was made seamless as possible after a lot of putty-sanding-painting process.

Strong metal wire was used for static dischargers.


Evergreen plastic parts were added to detail inside of exhaust nozzle. Afterburner assembly was imitated from another model. Burned effect was made with dry pastel.

Radome and Radar Homing and Warning Sensors are  product of Royal Resin.

IFF Antennas and its base are Evergreen plastic.
