Revell Fairey GANNET T.5 1/72 scale kit with British Royal Navy color.
Kit has been builded direct out of box and detailed with some scratch build works.
This Fairey Gannet is an abandoned airplane and builded to show extreme weathering effect.
All paints and weathering effects were made with acrylic paints.
When I saw this photo while doing internet research I decided to do this model. An abandonet Fairey Gannet. Found on this LINK
I ordered Revell’s 1/72 scale Fairey Gannet T.5 model for this project.
Its a skill 3 model, grey color plastic parts and totally engraved panel lines. Engaved panel thickness is slightly more deep than usual and kit has some fitting problem mentioned during building steps.
Here some quick kit review.
Its an easy model for quick building with good detailed and size of model not more than a size of hand. No detail in wheel bays but detail of cockpit is normal for 1/72 scale models. All movable partls like flaps, ailerons given separately by the kit. Canopy also can be positioned open or closed.
Starting to build model from the inner parts. Cockpit, nose wheel and bomb bays must be together according to kit building plan.
All main cockpit bases are together now.
Model has very small 3 seat. I added some rivet details.
Cockpit side panels cleaned for next steps.
And side panels modified to give an abandoned appearance inside of cockpit. Some panels and gauges drilled.
Dry fit parts so far. Some white plastic addition done to floor of cockpit.
Some cable has been added inner of opened panel to make abandoned cockpit view.
All the parts have been painted black base so far.
And weathered with acrylics, color pen and pigments.
Close up view of seats.
Close up view of instrument panels.
Close up view of side panels.
Results are very small but appeared very detailed abandoned cockpit.
Gluing all inner parts inside of fuselage is a little tricky.
All parts must be level. Inner frame of fuselage must be good trimmed before gluing the parts. Closing the fuselage all parts together is totally difficult as shown big gaps occured between joining lines. Some gaps more than 1 mm.
Gaps filled and sanded with traditional methods. Glare shield has been detailed with some more wire additions.
There is another big gaps on the joinning line of fuselage and bomb bay doors. This gap was too big to fill with puty thats why this gaps eliminated with addition of plastic.
Some modifications done on damaged landing light on wings and bigger navigation light with some clear parts addition.
Broken right aileron have been detailed and its bay filled with white plastic.
Broken propeller rotor core created from the simple spare parts.
Finally all parts are ready to be together.
All glass parts of the canopy was damaged according to references.
To do this effect all the clear parts of the kit drilled to leave only canopy frame. After painting phase all broken glass remains is going to add from the thin clear plastic.
Preparing of painting.
All open areas have been masked with tape and masking fluids.
First color of the camouflage has airbrushed with acrylics. I used mix of Model Air 71045 and Model Air White.
Before painting the upper color some masking need to do chipping effect as shown picture below.
The mask of chipping effeckt is done with a part of old sponge and masking fluid. First the sponge sunk in masking fluid, excess of the fluid removed and touched to surface where chipping effect planned.
Main masking process completed for upper color after the masking fluid is dried.
Upper color has been airbrushed with mix of Model Air 71047 + 71004 and white. Result below are after all masks removed.
Clear coat has been airbrushed and decals applied.
The next pictures are shows the result after oil paint weathering with dark grey tones.
And the next pictures show the effect of lighter color of grey oil paint tones comparing both wings.
Another coat of clear airbrushed after all the oil weathering completed.
I used mainly the acrylic weathering on this model.Various color of the acrylics and various concentration of water and paint mix done as you wish. Touched to the surface with a brush where the weathering expected accroding to the reference. When the paint is wet unwanted excess can be clean or add more. After all the acrylic weathering finished the effect can be sand to make more worn over weathered surface.
The remaining photos shows the weathering done with only acrylic brown color paints. There is no more photo for different colors but all the remaining weatherings have been completed with same way.
The photos of the finished aircraft will be published as soon as possible.
Total building time is 4 month.
